If a stone falls out of a ring, stop wearing the ring immediately. Continuing to wear it can damage the empty setting, loosen additional stones, or make the repair more difficult.

Save the stone if you find it

Place the loose stone in a small sealed container or soft pouch. Do not tape it directly to paper or place it loose in a pocket where it may be scratched or lost.

Protect the ring

Store the ring separately so the exposed prongs or setting do not catch on fabric or other jewelry. Avoid trying to press the stone back into place.

Document what happened

Take clear photographs of the ring, the empty setting, and the loose stone. Keep purchase records, appraisals, prior repair documents, and insurance information together.

Arrange an assessment

A jeweler will need to examine the stone, prongs, basket, surrounding stones, and overall structure. The original stone may be reset if it is undamaged and still fits securely, but the setting may require repair first.

Warranty and insurance are separate questions

Coverage depends on the exact written terms of the jeweler, protection plan, or insurer. A lost stone is not automatically covered by every warranty.
