Ring shank replacement is a repair in which a worn, cracked, bent, or overly thin portion of the band is removed and replaced with new metal. It is commonly considered when the lower half of a ring no longer has enough sound material for a simple sizing or localized reinforcement.

When replacement may be recommended

• The bottom of the band has become very thin or sharp.
• An old sizing seam has cracked repeatedly.
• The ring is badly out of round or bends easily.
• Past polishing or repairs have reduced the metal too far.
• A major size change cannot be completed safely with the existing shank.

How the repair is performed

The jeweler removes the compromised section, fabricates a compatible replacement, joins it to the sound portion of the ring, reshapes the band, and restores the finish. Laser welding or traditional soldering may be used depending on the metal, stones, construction, and available equipment.

Half shank versus full shank replacement

A half-shank repair usually replaces the lower portion of the band. A more extensive replacement may be needed when wear reaches the shoulders or when multiple areas are weak. Replacing more metal is not automatically better; the goal is to preserve sound original construction while restoring safe thickness and shape.

Questions to ask before approving the work

• Which portion will be replaced?
• What finished width and thickness will the new section have?
• Will existing engraving or hallmarks be affected?
• Will the stones and prongs be inspected during the repair?
• How will the finish be matched?
