Moissanite Windowing Explained: Causes and What to Look For
Windowing occurs when part of a gemstone allows the viewer to see through it instead of returning light. It is most often discussed with step cuts and shallow stones.
What a window looks like
A window can appear as a transparent or weak central area where the background, setting, or finger is unusually visible through the stone.
What causes windowing
Shallow pavilion proportions, unsuitable facet angles, or weak internal reflection can allow light to pass through the stone rather than return to the viewer.
Which shapes show it most readily?
Emerald and Asscher cuts have broad, open facets, so windowing is easier to see. Other shapes can also show weak areas if their proportions are poorly balanced.
Windowing vs. normal contrast
Healthy contrast creates intentional dark and light facet patterns that change as the stone moves. A window tends to remain transparent and visually empty rather than switching on and off.
How to check for it
- View the stone face-up over a neutral surface.
- Move it slowly through several angles.
- Look for a persistent see-through region.
- Compare loose-stone video with the stone placed over a finger-colored background.
Can a setting hide a window?
A setting may make it less obvious from certain angles, but it does not correct the underlying light performance. The better solution is selecting a well-proportioned stone.
Some transparency at extreme angles is normal. The concern is a persistent central window that weakens the face-up appearance.
