Does Moissanite Get Cloudy Over Time?

Quality moissanite does not normally become permanently cloudy from ordinary aging. A dull or hazy appearance is more often caused by surface buildup, residue beneath the setting, or an oily film.

Common causes of dullness

  • Soap, lotion, and skin oils
  • Hard-water deposits
  • Cosmetics or cleaning residue
  • Debris trapped under the stone

Oil-slick appearance

Some moissanite can develop a temporary iridescent surface film sometimes called an oil slick. It is a residue issue rather than the stone changing internally.

When haze needs inspection

If careful cleaning does not restore clarity, the issue may involve damage, coating, setting debris, or a different gemstone than expected. Have the ring evaluated before using aggressive cleaners or abrasives.
