Do You Need an Appraisal to Insure an Engagement Ring?

An appraisal is not always required to insure an engagement ring, but many insurers request one for higher-value jewelry or when the purchase receipt does not provide enough information. Requirements vary by insurer, policy, item value, age, and documentation.

Documents an insurer may accept

  • recent purchase receipt
  • detailed sales invoice
  • grading or laboratory report
  • jewelry appraisal
  • clear photographs
  • serial numbers or identifying inscriptions when applicable

Why an appraisal may be requested

The insurer may need a detailed description and an appropriate replacement estimate to schedule the ring, set a coverage limit, or evaluate a future claim.

A grading report is not automatically an appraisal

A grading report may document a gemstone’s observed characteristics, while an appraisal assigns a monetary value for a stated purpose. One does not necessarily replace the other.

Confirm the policy terms directly

Ask the insurer what documentation is required, how recent it must be, whether the item will be scheduled separately, what valuation basis is used, and how claims are settled.

Avoid assuming the highest appraisal is best

An unsupported or inflated replacement figure may lead to unnecessarily high premiums without producing a larger claim payment. Coverage should reflect the policy’s actual replacement method and terms.
