A cathedral setting uses shoulders that rise toward the center setting. A non-cathedral ring attaches the center head without those elevated supports.

Rising shoulders can visually frame the stone and provide side support. Depending on the design, they may also help integrate a larger center setting with the shank.

Non-cathedral setting

A non-cathedral profile can look cleaner and more open from the side. It may emphasize the center basket or create a more minimal silhouette.

Height is separate from cathedral style

A cathedral ring is not automatically high, and a non-cathedral ring is not automatically low. Basket depth, bridge height, stone dimensions, and prong architecture control the actual profile.

Wedding-band compatibility

Either style can allow a straight band if the bridge and lower setting are designed with adequate clearance.
