Moissanite is highly scratch resistant, but it is not indestructible. Like other gemstones, it can chip or break if struck with sufficient force at a vulnerable edge.

Scratching

Ordinary household contact is unlikely to scratch moissanite, though harder materials or loose abrasive particles can still damage surfaces over time.

Chipping

Points and corners on pear, marquise, princess, radiant, and similar shapes need appropriate protection. A blow near a girdle or exposed corner may create a chip.

Breakage

Severe impact, improper setting pressure, or pre-existing damage can cause larger fractures. Damage risk is influenced by cut, thickness, setting design, and wear habits.

After a significant impact, inspect the stone, prongs, and setting rather than assuming hardness prevented damage.
