Can Hand Sanitizer Damage Rings or Fine Jewelry?
Occasional contact with hand sanitizer may not visibly harm many solid gold or platinum rings, but repeated exposure can affect finishes, residues, plating, adhesives, and certain stones.
Alcohol-based sanitizer
Alcohol itself is generally less concerning for solid gold and platinum than for plated surfaces, organic gems, pearls, or jewelry containing glued components. Added fragrances, moisturizers, dyes, and other ingredients can leave buildup under stones and around prongs.
Sanitizer containing chlorine compounds
Products that use chlorine-based disinfecting ingredients can be more damaging to some metal alloys. Chlorine exposure may weaken gold alloys over time, especially at soldered or stressed areas. Household bleach and pool chemicals are more concentrated concerns and should be kept away from fine jewelry.
