Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both diamonds. Their main difference is origin: one grows in a laboratory; the other forms in the earth. Choosing between them starts with what matters to you, then moves to the individual stone and the complete ring.
This guide compares the two diamond origins. If you are also considering moissanite, use our separate moissanite vs lab diamond guide.
Lab-grown vs natural diamonds at a glance
| Question | Lab-grown diamond | Natural diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Is it diamond? | Yes | Yes |
| Where does it form? | In a laboratory | In the earth |
| Does origin alone tell you how it will look? | No; compare the actual stone | No; compare the actual stone |
| What should your paperwork say? | Laboratory-grown origin | Natural origin |
| What should you compare before buying? | Stone details, documentation and the finished ring price | Stone details, documentation and the finished ring price |
What makes a lab-grown diamond a diamond?
Both have a crystalline carbon structure and essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties. Lab-grown diamonds are produced using methods such as high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD).
They should not be confused with moissanite, which is a different gemstone. A familiar diamond appearance does not establish natural origin; reliable identification requires appropriate professional testing. See GIA’s explanation of natural and laboratory-grown diamonds.
Choose the origin, then compare the individual stone
If an earth-formed gemstone is central to the meaning of your ring, natural origin may be an essential requirement. If you want a diamond and laboratory-grown origin suits your priorities, a lab-grown diamond may be the right direction. Neither preference determines the ring design you should love.
Write down your priorities before comparing offers: your total budget, preferred shape, stone dimensions, metal, setting and how you want the ring to sit with a wedding band. Compare complete configurations. A loose-stone offer and a finished ring are different purchases.
For example, someone who loves an oval solitaire can first decide whether diamond origin matters to them, then compare the available oval stones and settings. Someone choosing between moissanite and lab-grown diamond is making a different gemstone choice; our comparison guide helps with that decision.
Ask about the report for the stone you will receive
Request the issuing laboratory, report or assessment number, and the details attached to the individual supplied stone. Confirm which documents accompany your order before relying on a general phrase such as “certified diamond.”
Report terminology varies. GIA’s current laboratory-grown diamond service uses a distinct quality-assessment format, and its descriptive categories are Premium and Standard. Older GIA lab-grown diamond reports remain valid. A category name is not a substitute for confirming the specific information you need.
For the current service, see GIA’s laboratory-grown diamond services and its explanation of the descriptive terminology.
How this applies at Jewel Eternal
Jewel Eternal offers moissanite and lab-grown diamond options on many designs. Check the stone and metal choices on the individual listing; availability varies by design.
Our lab-grown diamond sourcing target is D–F color and VS1 clarity or better. Confirm the individual supplied stone’s grades and any accompanying report. This target does not mean every stone is D color or VVS clarity, or that every stone comes with a particular laboratory’s report.
For an approved design offered in both versions, the design stays the same while the selected stone type changes throughout: moissanite with moissanite accents, or lab-grown diamond with lab-grown diamond accents. Explicit colored sapphire or ruby designs retain their stated gemstone details.
Start with the Princess Solitaire or Asscher Solitaire to compare the available selections and finished prices. These are moissanite and lab-grown diamond listings; this educational comparison does not offer a natural-diamond configuration.
Your before-you-buy checklist
- Confirm the gemstone and, for diamond, its natural or laboratory-grown origin.
- Confirm the chosen stone size, dimensions, metal and ring size.
- Ask which grades and documents apply to the actual supplied center stone.
- Confirm accent materials and any customization details.
- Compare the final selected ring price and confirm the production and delivery expectations.

Make the design your own
Want a different stone size, metal or design detail? Most Jewel Eternal designs can be customized, and custom does not automatically mean a dramatically higher price. Simple changes may add relatively little; more involved designs are quoted individually.
